Australian Government lead by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has taken a bold step toward shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI), announcing a new strategic agreement with Anthropic, one of the world’s leading frontiers‑AI companies. The partnership signals a national commitment to building AI systems that are not only powerful, but safe, transparent, and aligned with public benefit.

Putting AI Safety at the Centre

At the heart of the agreement is a shared focus on AI safety and security. Anthropic will work closely with Australia’s AI Safety Institute to evaluate advanced models, share insights on emerging risks, and strengthen national readiness as AI capabilities evolve. This collaboration positions Australia as a proactive global player in responsible AI governance.

Fueling Research and Skills Development

To support the next generation of Australian researchers, Anthropic is providing AUD$3 million in Claude API credits to leading institutions across the country. These credits will power projects in genomics, rare disease diagnostics, stem cell science, and multidisciplinary AI applications across health, law, engineering, and business.

Beneficiary institutions include:

Garvan Institute of Medical Research

Centre for Population Genomics and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute

Curtin University

Boosting Innovation Through Startups

Early‑stage companies will also benefit. Anthropic is launching a startup support program offering up to USD$50,000 in API credits for teams working in high‑impact areas such as drug discovery, climate modelling, and medical diagnostics. It’s a direct boost to Australia’s growing deep‑tech and MedTech sectors.
